Healthy Hoff Contest!!!

Hey Everybody!

First person who can tell me why my apples have a white, stubborn, residue on them, wins a
Healthy Hoff Hat!

Here's what I know:

  • I washed my apples in a salt bath as I normally do
  • Residue appeared after the bath
  • Soaking in white vinegar did nothing
  • Scrubbing with soap and water lifted it a bit
  • I have no idea what it is, but I will be the judge of all answers and the most reasonable WINS!
Good Luck!
The Hoff

  1. I would assume it's wax....? Did the apples come from a grocery store?

  2. Hey Suzy!

Yes, the apple if from the grocery store and I should have mentioned it is not organic and not from the U.S.

  3. Well, either wax or some foreign pesticide carried in wax. Yuck either way. You know that even local apples are probably sprayed, to some degree, but rarely waxed. USDA allows "organic" apples to be sprayed with pesticides and insecticides, preferably biological formulations. What we need to find are "no-spray" orchards; or grow our own apples (this IS Ohio after all!)
